1Kings 7

1Kin. 7:1   And Solomon built his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house.

Well, Solomon took almost twice as long to build his house as he did the Lord’s house.  There are two ways one may view this fact.  First, Solomon had to make a magnificent edifice for himself to impress his subjects and the surrounding kings.  This would seem to be wise politics, but it leaves me questioning Solomon’s decision and motivation.  Second, Solomon might have assumed he needed to have a bigger and more impressive house than did the Lord because he was human on earth and God was a Supreme Being in heaven.  Now I see this possibility as less one of wisdom than of pride.  In either case, it smacks of self-aggrandizement and possible disrespect for the Lord.

1Kin. 7:2   And he built the house of the forests of Lebanon.  A hundred cubits was its length and fifty cubits its width and thirty cubits its height on four rows of pillars of cedar with cedar beams over the pillars.

And we see that Solomon’s house was quite a bit bigger than the Temple.  Refer to 1Kin. 6:2.  Note, however, that the king’s house was not overlaid with gold, only cedar.

1Kin. 7:3   And it was covered with cedar from above, over the side chambers that were over forty-five pillars, fifteen to a row.

1Kin. 7:4   And window frames were in three rows with window by window three fold.

1Kin. 7:5   And all the entrances with the door posts were square of opening, and the front was window against window three fold.

1Kin. 7:6   And a porch of pillars was made.  Fifty cubits was its length and thirty cubits its width; and a porch was over the front of them, and pillars and a projecting step were over their front.

1Kin. 7:7   And he made a porch of the throne that he would judge there, the porch of judgment; it was covered with cedar from floor to floor.

1Kin. 7:8   And of his house where he dwelled, the court other than the house for the porch, it was like this work.  And a house would be made for the daughter of Pharoah, whom Solomon took, like this porch.

1Kin. 7:9   All of these were of costly stones, like measures of hewn stones, cut by saw, within and without, and from the foundation up to the coping and from the outside to the great court.

1Kin. 7:10   And the foundation was of costly stones, huge stones, stones of ten cubits and stones of eight cubits.

1Kin. 7:11   And over were costly stones, like-measured hewn stones, and cedar.

1Kin. 7:12   And the great court, all around were three rows of hewn stone and a row of cedar beams that was as the inner court of the house of the Lord and as the porch of the house.

1Kin. 7:13   And king Solomon sent and brought Hiram from Tyre.

1Kin. 7:14   He was the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali, and his father had been a Tyrite, a worker of brass.  And he was full of wisdom and understanding and skill to perform every operation with brass.  And he came to king Solomon and performed all his work.

                                                                                                                                  [Return to 2Chr. 2:13]

1Kin. 7:15   And he fashioned two of the pillars of brass, one pillar was a height of eighteen cubits, that a twelve-cubit fillet might surround the other pillar.

1Kin. 7:16   And two capitals he made to set on the tops of the pillars from molten brass, one capital was a height of five cubits and the other capital, a height of five cubits.

                                                                                                                              [Return to 2Kin. 25:17]

1Kin. 7:17   There were nets of wrought checker work, wreaths of wrought chains for the capitals that were on top of the pillars, seven for one capital and seven for the other capital.

1Kin. 7:18   And he made the pillars, and he wound two rows of pomegranates about one network covering the capitals that were on top. Then he did the same to the other capital.

1Kin. 7:19   And the capitals that were on top of the pillars on the porch, wrought lily work of four cubits.

1Kin. 7:20   And the capitals on the two pillars, also from above near the body, beside the network and the pomegranates, were two hundred rows all around on the other capital.

The word in parentheses, translated as network, is thought to be missing a heh prefix, the definite article the.  The reason is that the next word, translated as the pomegranates, has the heh.  The presumed correction is in the brackets.

1Kin. 7:21   And he set up the pillars for the porch of the Temple.  And he set up the right pillar and called its name Jachin, and he set up the left pillar and called its name Boaz.

The name Jachin probably is meant to convey the message that He will establish, referring to God, and the name Boaz might mean in Him is strength, again referring to God.                               [Return to 2Chr. 3:17]

1Kin. 7:22   And on the top of the pillars was works of lilies.  So the work of the pillars was finished.

1Kin. 7:23   Then he made a molten sea ten in cubits from its edge to its edge, round in shape, and five in cubits its height, and a line thirty in cubits encompassed it all around.

The word in parentheses at the end of the top line, translated as and a line, is misspelled, having a heh where there shouldn’t be one.  The correction is in the brackets.

1Kin. 7:24   And below its brim were knops all around encompassing it, ten in a cubit, encompassing the sea all around, two rows of knops, cast with its casting.

1Kin. 7:25   It stood on twelve oxen, three facing to the north and three facing to the west and three facing to the south and three facing to the east.  And the sea was on them from above, and all of their rears were inward.

1Kin. 7:26   And its thickness was a hand-breadth and its brim was like the work of the brim of a cup of lily bud.  Two thousand baths it contained.                                  [Return to 2Chr. 4:5]

1Kin. 7:27   Then he made the ten bases of brass.  Each base was four in cubits long and four in cubits wide and three in cubits high.

1Kin. 7:28   And this is the making of each base, their borders, and the borders between the ledges,

1Kin. 7:29   that on the borders that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubim, and on the ledges it was the same as above, but on the bottom, hanging hand-worked wreaths were for the lions and for the oxen.

1Kin. 7:30   And four wheels of brass were for each base, and axles of brass; and its four wheels, there were shoulders for them; the shoulders were cast at the bottom of the laver at the side of each of the wreaths.

1Kin. 7:31   And its collar was inside the crown, and over it was a cubit.  And the mouth of it was round, a wrought pedestal, one and a half cubits.  And also on its collar were engravings and their borders were square, not round.

1Kin. 7:32   And the four wheels were beneath the borders and the axle housings of the wheels were in the base, and the height of each wheel was one and a half cubits.

1Kin. 7:33   And the handiwork of the wheels was like the work of a wheel of a chariot; their axle holders and their rims and their spokes and their hubs, the whole was cast.

1Kin. 7:34   And four shoulders were at the four corners of each base; from the base were its shoulders.

1Kin. 7:35   And in the top of the base, half a cubit high, was a round circuit, and on the top of the base its ledges and its borders were out of it.

1Kin. 7:36   And he engraved cherubim, lions, and palm trees on the plates of its ledges and on its borders like the proportion of each, and wreaths all around.

The word in parentheses has a superfluous vav prefix, which inserts a second and before the word, making the literal translation and on its and borders.  The correction is in the brackets.

1Kin. 7:37   Like this he made the ten bases, of one casting, one size, one shape, for each of them.

1Kin. 7:38   Then he made ten lavers of brass. Each laver held forty baths.  Each laver was four in cubits. One laver was on each base for the ten bases.

1Kin. 7:39   And he set the bases, five on the side of the house on the right and five on the side of the house on its left, and he set the sea at the right side of the house to the east, toward the south.

1Kin. 7:40   Then Hiram made the pots and the shovels and the basins.  And Hiram finished doing all the work that he wrought of the house of the Lord for king Solomon.

1Kin. 7:41   It was two pillars, and bowls of the capitals that were on top of the two pillars, and the two networks covering the two bowls of the capitals that were on top of the pillars

1Kin. 7:42   and the pomegranates, four hundred, for the two networks, two rows of pomegranates for each network covering the two bowls of the capitals that were on top of the pillars,

1Kin. 7:43   and the ten bases, and the ten lavers on the bases,

1Kin. 7:44   and the one sea, and the twelve oxen below the sea,

1Kin. 7:45   and the pots, and the shovels and the basins.  And all these vessels that Hiram made for king Solomon, of the house of the Lord, were of polished brass.

The word in parentheses has the heh and lamed interchanged.  If the word were translated as spelled, the second part of the verse would read and all the vessels of the tent that Hiram made..., which appears to make little sense, as the vessels named were not those of the tent.  The correct placement of the letters is in the brackets.

1Kin. 7:46   In the plain of the Jordan, the king cast them in the clay of the ground, between Succoth and Zarethan.

1Kin. 7:47   And Solomon left all the vessels whose number was very large.  The weight of the brass was not ascertained.

1Kin. 7:48   And Solomon made all the vessels that were of the house of the Lord:  The altar of gold, and the table on which the bread of showing would be, of gold,

1Kin. 7:49   and the candlesticks, five on the right and five on the left, before the sanctuary, of pure gold, with the flowers and the lamps and the tongs of gold,

1Kin. 7:50   and the cups, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the pans, and the firepans of pure gold, and the hinges for the doors of the inner house, for the Holiest of Holy Places, for the doors of the house, for the Temple, of gold.                                                   [Return to 2Chr. 4:22]

We can see that Solomon included ten of every vessel of which there was only one in the Tabernacle.

1Kin. 7:51   And all the work which king Solomon had wrought of the house of the Lord ended.  And Solomon brought the hallowed things of David, his father; he put the silver and the gold and the vessels into the treasuries of the house of the Lord.                  [Return to 2Chr. 5:1]
