1Chr. 14:1 And Hiram, king of Tyre, sent messengers to David and timbers of cedar and masons and carpenters to build a house for him.
The events of this chapter can be found in the second half of 2Samuel Chapter 5. There are some variations that are not too important, so I don’t point most of them out.
The name of Hiram in the parentheses is corrected here in the brackets by replacing the yad with a vav. The name appears as in the parentheses 15 other times with no correction in the books of 2Samuel and 1Kings. But here and throughout 2Chronicles the name appears as in the brackets a total of 10 times. Whatever the thinking behind this phenomenon, I can’t fathom it. It leaves me bewildered. It would seem as if the name had been changed in Hiram’s later life. But I doubt that. More likely, it was assumed to have been changed when these books of the Chronicles were recorded.
1Chr. 14:2 And David perceived that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, because his kingdom was lifted up on high for the sake of His people, Israel.
1Chr. 14:3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David begot more sons and daughters.
1Chr. 14:4 And these were the names of the children that were his in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,
1Chr. 14:5 and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,
1Chr. 14:6 and Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
1Chr. 14:7 and Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphelet.
In 2Sam. 5:16 and in 1Chr. 3:8 the second name in this verse is given as Eliada. That name is also mentioned in 1Kin. 11:23, and is probably of the same person.
1Chr. 14:8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king over all Israel, then all the Philistines came up seeking David. When David heard, then he came forth to face them.
1Chr. 14:9 When the Philistines came, then they spread out in the valley of rephaim.
1Chr. 14:10 And David inquired with God saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will deliver them into your hand.”
The name of the Philistines in the parentheses is misspelled. It has an extra yad. The correction is in the brackets.
1Chr. 14:11 So they went up into Baal-perazim and David smote them there. Then David said, “God has broken my enemies by my hand like a bursting wall of water.” Therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.
1Chr. 14:12 And they abandoned their gods there, so David commanded, and they were burned to ashes.
1Chr. 14:13 And the Philistines increased again and they made a raid in the valley.
1Chr. 14:14 And again David inquired with God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Turn from them, but you shall come to them in front of the mulberry trees.”
1Chr. 14:15 “And it shall be, after your hearing the sound of marching at the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall come out into battle, for God comes out before you to smite the body of Philistines.”
There’s another rare non-reversing vav prefix to a third-person verb in the first word of this verse. It is translated as and it shall be, when the translation (with the vav reversing) should be and it was. The latter translation, of course, is inappropriate in this context.
1Chr. 14:16 And David did as God had commanded him, and they smote the body of Philistines from Gibeon and as far as to Gezer.
1Chr. 14:17 And the name of David went out throughout all the lands, and the Lord put a dread of him upon all the nations.
