Except for the names of the priests and Levites recited later in this chapter and a few other details that are not found elsewhere, this story is only a short synopsis of parts of several chapters in 2Samuel.

1Chr. 15:1   And he made houses for himself in the city of David, and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.

1Chr. 15:2   Then David said, “None is to carry the ark of God except only the Levites, for the Lord chose among them to carry the ark of God and to serve Him forever.

1Chr. 15:3   And David gathered all Israel to Jerusalem for bringing up the ark of the Lord to its place that he had prepared for it.

1Chr. 15:4   And David gathered the sons of Aaron, and the Levites:

1Chr. 15:5   Belonging to the sons of Kohath were Uriel, the leader, his brethren, one hundred and twenty;

1Chr. 15:6   belonging to the sons of Merari were Asaiah, the leader, and his brethren, two hundred and twenty;

1Chr. 15:7   belonging to the sons of Gershom were Joel, the leader, and his brethren, one hundred and thirty;

1Chr. 15:8   belonging to the sons of Elizaphan were Shemaiah, the leader, and his brethren, two hundred;

1Chr. 15:9   belonging to the sons of Hebron were Eliel, the leader, and his brethren, eighty;

1Chr. 15:10   belonging to the sons of Uzziel were Amminadab, the leader, and his brethren, one hundred and twelve.

1Chr. 15:11   And David called for Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab,

1Chr. 15:12   and he said to them, “You are the heads of the Levites' households.  Sanctify yourselves, you and your brethren, so you can bring up the ark of the Lord, God of Israel, to my place prepared for it.”

1Chr. 15:13   “Because you did not at the earlier time, the Lord, our God, burst among us, for we did not inquire of Him according to ordinance.”

Here we see pretty definitively that David did blame himself for not inquiring of the Lord before moving the ark.  See 1Chr. 13:11.

1Chr. 15:14   Then the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, God of Israel.

1Chr. 15:15   And the sons of the Levites carried the ark of God, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord, on their shoulder with the staves above them.

1Chr. 15:16   And David spoke to the leaders of the Levites to set up their brethren, the singers, with musical instruments, psalteries and harps and cymbals sounding aloud, lifting up voice for joy.

1Chr. 15:17   And the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel, and from his brethren was Asaph son of Berechiah, and from the sons of Merari, their brethren, was Ethan son of Kushaiah.

1Chr. 15:18   And were with them their brethren of second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphalehu, and Obed-edom, and Jeieh, the porters.

1Chr. 15:19   And the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were sounding on loud cymbals of brass.

1Chr. 15:20   And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, were with psalteries on alamoth.

1Chr. 15:21   And Mattithiah, and Eliphalehu, and Mikneiahu, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah were with harps, beside the sheminith for the leader.

1Chr. 15:22   And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was into singing; he was an expert in song because of being talented.                                                                                          [Return to 2Chr. 35:9]

1Chr. 15:23   And Berechiah and Elkanah were the gatekeepers for the ark.

1Chr. 15:24   And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Beniah, and Eliezer, the priests, were blowing on trumpets before the ark of God.  And Obed-edom and Jehiah were gatekeepers for the ark.

Here in the parentheses we find a rather interesting error.  The word, translated as were blowing [on trumpets], is spelled with an extra tsadi, and the correction is after the right bracket.  But the following word, translated as on trumpets, has the extra tsadi and is not an error.  Most peculiar it is, but the Hebrew root verb for to blow on trumpets has only one tsadi, while the root noun for trumpet has two tsadis.

                                                                                                        [Return to 2Chr. 29:28]

1Chr. 15:25   So it was, David and the elders of Israel and the captains of thousands were going to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-edom with joy.

1Chr. 15:26   And it was, with God helping the Levites, bearers of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that they sacrificed seven bullocks and seven rams.

1Chr. 15:27   And David was mantled in a robe of fine white linen, as were all the Levites bearing the ark and the singers and Chenaniah, the song leader of the singers, but upon David was a linen ephod.

1Chr. 15:28   So all Israel were bringing up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the shophar, and with trumpets, and with cymbals sounding aloud, with psalteries and harps.

1Chr. 15:29   And it was, the ark of the covenant of the Lord was coming up to the city of David, that Michal daughter of Saul was looking down through a window and saw the king, David, dancing and being merry, and she had disdain for him in her heart.
