Job 39

 

הֲיָדַעְתָּ עֵת לֶדֶת יַעֲלֵי־סָלַע חֹלֵל אַיָּלוֹת תִּשְׁמֹר׃   39:1

Job 39:1   “Do you know the time of the mountain goats of the cliff bringing forth?

                             Can you observe the birth pain of the does?”

תִּסְפֹּר יְרָחִים תְּמַלֶּאנָה וְיָדַעְתָּ עֵת לִדְתָּנָה׃   39:2

Job 39:2   “Could you declare the months they must fulfill,

                             and know the time of their delivery?”

תִּכְרַעְנָה יַלְדֵיהֶן תְּפַלַּחְנָה חֶבְלֵיהֶם תְּשַׁלַּחְנָה׃   39:3

Job 39:3   “They must kneel, their young,

                             bite their cords loose, cast off.”

יַחְלְמוּ בְנֵיהֶם יִרְבּוּ בַבָּר יָצְאוּ וְלֹא־שָׁבוּ לָמוֹ׃   39:4

Job 39:4   “Their offspring must be healthy,

                             must grow up in the open field,

                   must go forth, and they do not return to them.”

מִי־שִׁלַּח פֶּרֶא חָפְשִׁי וּמֹסְרוֹת עָרוֹד מִי פִתֵּחַ׃   39:5

Job 39:5   “Who sends the wild ass away free,

                             and Who loosens the bonds of the wild ass,

אֲשֶׁר־שַׂמְתִּי עֲרָבָה בֵיתוֹ וּמִשְׁכְּנוֹתָיו מְלֵחָה׃   39:6

Job 39:6   whose house I have made the wilderness,

                             and the salt flat its dwelling places?”

יִשְׂחַק לַהֲמוֹן קִרְיָה תְּשֻׁאוֹת נוֹגֵשׂ לֹא יִשְׁמָע׃   39:7

Job 39:7   “It will have scorn for the sound of the city,

                             will not obey the clamors of the driver.”

יְתוּר הָרִים מִרְעֵהוּ וְאַחַר כָּל־יָרוֹק יִדְרוֹשׁ׃   39:8

Job 39:8   “The range of mountains would be its pasture,

                             and after every green thing it would search.”

הֲיֹאבֶה רֵּימ עָבְדֶךָ אִם־יָלִין עַל־אֲבוּסֶךָ׃   39:9

Job 39:9   “Would the wild ox accept serving you

                             or would it lodge by your manger?”

הֲתִקְשָׁר־רֵים בְּתֶלֶם עֲבֹתֹו אִם־יְשַׂדֵּד עֲמָקִים אַחֲרֶיךָ׃   39:10

Job 39:10   “Could you bind the wild ox, in a furrow its cord?

                             Would it plow valleys after you?”

הֲתִבְטַח־בֹּו כִּי־רַב כֹּחֹו וְתַעֲזֹב אֵלָיו יְגִיעֶךָ׃   39:11

Job 39:11   “Could you trust in it because its strength is great,

                             and leave your toil to it?”

הֲתַאֲמִין בֹּו כִּי־(יָשׁוּב) [יָשִׁיב] זַרְעֶךָ וְגָרְנְךָ יֶאֱסֹף׃   39:12

Job 39:12   “Could you rely on it that it would bring back your seed,

                             and gather to your threshing floor?”

The word in the parentheses should be spelled with a yad in place of the vav, as shown in the brackets.

כְּנַף־רְנָנִים נֶעֱלָסָה אִם־אֶבְרָה חֲסִידָה וְנֹצָה׃   39:13

Job 39:13   “The wing of ostriches flaps joyously,

                             or the pinion of the stork, and plumage.”

כִּי־תַעֲזֹב לָאָרֶץ בֵּצֶיהָ וְעַל־עָפָר תְּחַמֵּם׃   39:14

Job 39:14   “For she will forsake her eggs to the earth,

                             and warm them by the dust,

וַתִּשְׁכַּח כִּי־רֶגֶל תְּזוּרֶהָ וְחַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה תְּדוּשֶׁהָ׃   39:15

Job 39:15   and forget that a foot could crush it,

                             or a beast of the field could trample it.”

הִקְשִׁיחַ בָּנֶיהָ לְּלֹא־לָהּ לְרִיק יְגִיעָהּ בְּלִי־פָחַד׃   39:16

Job 39:16   “She treats her offspring roughly as if not hers.

                             Without fear her labor is in vain,

כִּי־הִשָּׁהּ אֱלוֹהַּ חָכְמָה וְלֹא־חָלַק לָהּ בַּבִּינָה׃   39:17

Job 39:17   for God has deprived her of wisdom,

                             and not endowed her with understanding.”

כָּעֵת בַּמָּרוֹם תַּמְרִיא תִּשְׂחַק לַסּוּס וּלְרֹכְבוֹ׃   39:18

Job 39:18   “After a time she will proudly flap wing,

                             make sport for the horse and its rider.”

הֲתִתֵּן לַסּוּס גְּבוּרָה הֲתַלְבִּישׁ צַוָּארוֹ רַעְמָה׃   39:19

Job 39:19   “Did you grant strength to the horse?

                             Did you put the mane on his neck?”

הְתַרְעִישֶׁנּוּ כָּאַרְבֶּה הוֹד נַחְרוֹ אֵימָה׃   39:20

Job 39:20   “Did you make its leap as that of the locust,

                             the vigor of its snorting a terror?”

יַחְפְּרוּ בָעֵמֶק וְיָשִׂישׂ בְּכֹחַ יֵצֵא לִקְרַאת־נָשֶׁק׃   39:21

Job 39:21   “They would dig in the valley as he would exult in strength,

                             go forth to encounter weaponry.”

יִשְׂחַק לְפַחַד וְלֹא יֵחָת וְלֹא־יָשׁוּב מִפְּנֵי־חָרֶב׃   39:22

Job 39:22   “He would sport about terror and not be dismayed,

                             nor turn back from the sword.”

עָלָיו תִּרְנֶה אַשְׁפָּה לַהַב חֲנִית וְכִידוֹן׃   39:23

Job 39:23   “The quiver could rattle upon it,

                             the flashing of the spear and the javelin.”

בְּרַעַשׁ וְרֹגֶז יְגַמֶּא־אָרֶץ וְלֹא־יַאֲמִין כִּי־קוֹל שׁוֹפָר׃   39:24

Job 39:24   “With quaking and raging, it would swallow the ground,

                             and not stand firm when it was the sound of the horn.”

בְּדֵי שֹׁפָר יֹאמַר הֶאָח וּמֵרָחוֹק יָרִיחַ מִלְחָמָה רַעַם שָׂרִים וּתְרוּעָה׃   39:25

Job 39:25   “With the loud sound of the horn, it would answer ‘Aha,’

                             and from far off could smell battle,

                       the thunder of the captains and the battle cry.”

הֲמִבִּינָתְךָ יַאֲבֶר־נֵץ יִפְרֹשׂ (כְּנָפֹו) [כְּנָפָיו] לְתֵימָן׃   39:26

Job 39:26   “Could the hawk soar because of your understanding,

                             spread its wings southward?”

The word in the parentheses should be spelled with a yad, which makes the word, translated as its wings, plural.  The correction is in the brackets.

אִם־עַל־פִּיךָ יַגְבִּיהַּ נָשֶׁר וְכִי יָרִים קִנּוֹ׃   39:27

Job 39:27   “By your mouth, would the vulture go aloft

                             and then set up its nest?”

סֶלַע יִשְׁכֹּן וְיִתְלֹנָן עַל־שֶׁן־סֶלַע וּמְצוּדָה׃   39:28

Job 39:28   “A crag, it would settle down,

                             and abide on a point of the rock as a stronghold.”

מִשָּׁם חָפַר־אֹכֶל לְמֵרָחוֹק עֵינָיו יַבִּיטוּ׃   39:29

Job 39:29   “From there it searches out food;

                             its eyes can look to a distant place,

 וְאֶפְרֹחֹו) [וְאֶפְרֹחָיו] יְעַלְעוּ־דָם וּבַאֲשֶׁר חֲלָלִים שָׁם הוּא׃   39:30

Job 39:30   so its young ones will suck up blood.

                             And amid where the slain are, there it would be.”
