וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל הִתְיַחְשׂוּ וְהִנָּם כְּתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר מַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה הָגְלוּ לְבָבֶל בְּמַעֲלָם׃   9:1

1Chr. 9:1   So all of Israel were reckoned genealogically and, behold, they have been written in the book of the kings of Israel when Judah were taken into exile to Babylon because of their transgression.

Here are two rare exceptions to my rule that a group is normally taken as one (singular) while individuals are taken as plural.  The phrase translated as all of Israel were ... is one exception, and the phrase Judah were taken into exile ... is the other.  But since these are the names of peoples (or lands), it seems reasonable that they would be considered plural as an exception.

וְהַיּוֹשְׁבִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים אֲשֶׁר בַּאֲחֻזָּתָם בְּעָרֵיהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל הַכֹּהֲנִים הַלְוִיִּם וְהַנְּתִינִים׃   9:2

1Chr. 9:2   Now the first inhabitants who were on their possession in their cities of Israel were the priests, the Levites, and the Nethinim.

וּבִירוּשָׁלִַם יָשְׁבוּ מִן־בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה וּמִן־בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן וּמִן־בְּנֵי אֶפְרַיִם וּמְנַשֶּׁה׃   9:3

1Chr. 9:3   And some of the children of Judah, and some of the children of Benjamin, and some of the children of Ephraim and Manasseh dwelled in Jerusalem.

עוּתַי בֶּן־עַמִּיהוּד בֶּן־עָמְרִי בֶּן־אִמְרִי בֶן־(בָּנִימִן) [בָּנִי] [מִן]־בְּנֵי־פֶרֶץ בֶּן־יְהוּדָה׃   9:4

1Chr. 9:4   Uthai was a son of Ammihud son of Omri son of Imri son of Bani from the children of Perez son of Judah.

The error in the parentheses in this verse is composed of two words, translated as Bani from, which are shown separated in the two sets of brackets.

וּמִן־הַשִּׁילוֹנִי עֲשָׂיָה הַבְּכוֹר וּבָנָיו׃   9:5

1Chr. 9:5   And from the Shilonites was Asaiah, the first born, and his sons.

וּמִן־בְּנֵי־זֶרַח יְעוּאֵל וַאֲחֵיהֶם שֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹת וְתִשְׁעִים׃   9:6

1Chr. 9:6   And from the sons of Zerach was Jeuel, and their brethren were six hundred and ninety.

וּמִן־בְּנֵי בִּנְיָמִן סַלּוּא בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־הוֹדַוְיָה בֶּן־הַסְּנֻאָה׃   9:7

1Chr. 9:7   And from the children of Benjamin were Sallu son of Meshullam son of Hodaviah son of Hassenuah,

וְיִבְנְיָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָם וְאֵלָה בֶן־עֻזִּי בֶּן־מִכְרִי וּמְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־שְׁפַטְיָה בֶּן־רְעוּאֵל בֶּן־יִבְנִיָּה׃   9:8

1Chr. 9:8   and Ibneiah son of Jeroham, and Elah son of Uzzi son of Michri, and Meshullam son of Shephatiah son of Reuel son of Ibneiah;

וַאֲחֵיהֶם לְתֹלְדוֹתָם תְּשַׁע מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים וְשִׁשָּׁה כָּל־אֵלֶּה אֲנָשִׁים רָאשֵׁי אָבוֹת לְבֵית אֲבֹתֵיהֶם׃   9:9

1Chr. 9:9   and their brethren in their generations were nine hundred and fifty-six.  All these men were heads of households in the house of their fathers.

וּמִן־הַכֹּהֲנִים יְדַעְיָה וִיהוֹיָרִיב וְיָכִין׃   9:10

1Chr. 9:10   And some of the priests were Jedaiah and Jehoiarib and Jachin,

וַעֲזַרְיָה בֶן־חִלְקִיָּה בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־צָדוֹק בֶּן־מְרָיוֹת בֶּן־אֲחִיטוּב נְגִיד בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים׃   9:11

1Chr. 9:11   and Azariah son of Hilkiah son of Meshullam son of Zadok son of Meraioth son of Ahitub, leader of the house of God,

וַעֲדָיָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָם בֶּן־פַּשְׁחוּר בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּה וּמַעְשַׂי בֶּן־עֲדִיאֵל בֶּן־יַחְזֵרָה בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־מְשִׁלֵּמִית בֶּן־אִמֵּר׃   9:12

1Chr. 9:12   and Adaiah son of Jeroham son of Pashhur son of Malchijah, and Maasai son of Adiel son of Jahzerah son of Meshullam son of Meshillemith son of Immer.

וַאֲחֵיהֶם רָאשִׁים לְבֵית אֲבוֹתָם אֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע מֵאוֹת וְשִׁשִּׁים גִּבּוֹרֵי חֵיל מְלֶאכֶת עֲבוֹדַת בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִים׃   9:13

1Chr. 9:13   And their brethren, heads in the house of their fathers, were a thousand and seven hundred and sixty, strong men able to do the work of the service of the house of God.

וּמִן־הַלְוִיִּם שְׁמַעְיָה בֶן־חַשּׁוּב בֶּן־עַזְרִיקָם בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָה מִן־בְּנֵי מְרָרִי׃   9:14

1Chr. 9:14   And some of the Levites were Shamaiah son of Hasshub son of Azrikam son of Hashabiah from the sons of Merari,

וּבַקְבַּקַּר חֶרֶשׁ וְגָלָל וּמַתַּנְיָה בֶּן־מִיכָא בֶּן־זִכְרִי בֶּן־אָסָף׃   9:15

1Chr. 9:15   and Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah son of Mica son of Zichri son of Asaph,

וְעֹבַדְיָה בֶּן־שְׁמַעְיָה בֶּן־גָּלָל בֶּן־יְדוּתוּן וּבֶרֶכְיָה בֶן־אָסָא בֶּן־אֶלְקָנָה הַיּוֹשֵׁב בְּחַצְרֵי נְטוֹפָתִי׃   9:16

1Chr. 9:16   and Obadiah son of Shamaiah son of Galal son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah son of Asa son of Elkanah, who was a dweller in the villages of the Netophathites.

וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִים שַׁלּוּם וְעַקּוּב וְטַלְמֹן וַאֲחִימָן וַאֲחִיהֶם שַׁלּוּם הָרֹאשׁ׃   9:17

1Chr. 9:17   And of the porters were Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, (and their brother, Shallum, the chief),

וְעַד־הֵנָּה בְּשַׁעַר הַמֶּלֶךְ מִזְרָחָה הֵמָּה הַשֹּׁעֲרִים לְמַחֲנוֹת בְּנֵי לֵוִי׃   9:18

1Chr. 9:18   and up till now had been at the gate of the king eastward; they were the porters for the camps of the children of Levi.

וְשַׁלּוּם בֶּן־קוֹרֵא בֶּן־אֶבְיָסָף בֶּן־קֹרַח וְאֶחָיו לְבֵית־אָבִיו הַקָּרְחִים עַל מְלֶאכֶת הָעֲבוֹדָה שֹׁמְרֵי   9:19

  הַסִּפִּים לָאֹהֶל וַאֲבֹתֵיהֶם עַל־מַחֲנֵה יְהוָה שֹׁמְרֵי הַמָּבוֹא׃

1Chr. 9:19   And Shallum son of Kore son of Abiasaph son of Korah, and his brethren belonging to the house of his fathers, the Korahites, had been over the work of the service, door keepers for the Tent.  And their fathers had been over the camp of the Lord, keepers of the entrance.

וּפִינְחָס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָר נָגִיד הָיָה עֲלֵיהֶם לְפָנִים יְהוָה עִמּוֹ׃   9:20

1Chr. 9:20   And Phinehas son of Eleazar had been leader over them in the past; the Lord was with him.

זְכַרְיָה בֶּן מְשֶׁלֶמְיָה שֹׁעֵר פֶּתַח לְאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד׃   9:21

1Chr. 9:21   Zechariah son of Meshelemiah had been porter of the doorway to the tent of meeting.

כֻּלָּם הַבְּרוּרִים לְשֹׁעֲרִים בַּסִּפִּים מָאתַיִם וּשְׁנֵים עָשָׂר הֵמָּה בְחַצְרֵיהֶם הִתְיַחְשָׂם הֵמָּה יִסַּד דָּוִיד   9:22

 וּשְׁמוּאֵל הָרֹאֶה בֶּאֱמוּנָתָם׃

1Chr. 9:22   All of them chosen for gate keepers were two hundred and twelve.  They in their villages were reckoned by their genealogies.  David had appointed them, with Samuel, the seer, to their training.

וְהֵם וּבְנֵיהֶם עַל־הַשְּׁעָרִים לְבֵית־יְהוָה לְבֵית־הָאֹהֶל לְמִשְׁמָרוֹת׃   9:23

1Chr. 9:23   So they and their sons were over the gates to the house of the Lord, to the house of the Tent, according to wards.

לְאַרְבַּע רוּחוֹת יִהְיוּ הַשֹּׁעֲרִים מִזְרָח יָמָּה צָפוֹנָה וָנֶגְבָּה׃   9:24

1Chr. 9:24    The porters would be for the four sides, east, west, north, and south.

וַאֲחֵיהֶם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶם לָבוֹא לְשִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים מֵעֵת אֶל־עֵת עִם־אֵלֶּה׃   9:25

1Chr. 9:25   And their brethren in their villages would be coming periodically for the seven days to be with them,

כִּי בֶאֱמוּנָה הֵמָּה אַרְבַּעַת גִּבֹּרֵי הַשֹּׁעֲרִים הֵם הַלְוִיִּם וְהָיוּ עַל־הַלְּשָׁכוֹת וְעַל הָאֹצְרוֹת בֵּית   9:26

 הָאֱלֹהִים׃

1Chr. 9:26   for the four most able of the porters were training them -- they were of the Levites -- . And they would be over the chambers and over the treasuries of the house of God.

וּסְבִיבוֹת בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִים יָלִינוּ כִּי־עֲלֵיהֶם מִשְׁמֶרֶת וְהֵם עַל־הַמַּפְתֵּחַ וְלַבֹּקֶר לַבֹּקֶר׃   9:27

1Chr. 9:27   And they would spend the night all around the house of God, for a charge was upon them that they were over the opening, and it was every morning.

וּמֵהֶם עַל־כְּלֵי הָעֲבוֹדָה כִּי־בְמִסְפָּר יְבִיאוּם וּבְמִסְפָּר יוֹצִיאוּם׃   9:28

1Chr. 9:28   And some of them were over the vessels of the service, for by tally they would bring them in and by tally they would take them out.

וּמֵהֶם מְמֻנִּים עַל־הַכֵּלִים וְעַל כָּל־כְּלֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְעַל־הַסֹּלֶת וְהַיַּיִן וְהַשֶּׁמֶן וְהַלְּבוֹנָה וְהַבְּשָׂמִים׃   9:29

1Chr. 9:29   And some of them were appointed over the implements and over all the vessels of holiness and over the fine flour and the wine and the oil and the frankincense and the spices.

וּמִן־בְּנֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים רֹקְחֵי הַמִּרְקַחַת לַבְּשָׂמִים׃   9:30

1Chr. 9:30   And some of the sons of the priests would be mixers of the compound for the spices.

וּמַתִּתְיָה מִן־הַלְוִיִּם הוּא הַבְּכוֹר לְשַׁלֻּם הַקָּרְחִי בֶּאֱמוּנָה עַל מַעֲשֵׂה הַחֲבִתִּים׃   9:31

1Chr. 9:31   And Mattithiah, from the Levites (he was the first born of Shallum's, the Korahite) was faithfully over pan fried things.

וּמִן־בְּנֵי הַקְּהָתִי מִן־אֲחֵיהֶם עַל־לֶחֶם הַמַּעֲרָכֶת לְהָכִין שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּת׃   9:32

1Chr. 9:32   And some of the Kohathite sons, of their brethren, were over the table bread to prepare every Sabbath.

Whoa!  What’s going on here?  The Kohathites?  They were Levites.  The table bread was presumably the show bread.  That was to be prepared only by the high priest every Sabbath.  See Levi. 24:8.  How could Levites have been charged with preparing it?  There are only two possible explanations for this verse.  This is either an error, or the responsibility had inappropriately fallen to the Kohathites some time after the Babylonian exile.  And I find it difficult to believe it’s an error.

וְאֵלֶּה הַמְשֹׁרְרִים רָאשֵׁי אָבֹות לַלְוִיִּם בַּלְּשָׁכֹת (פְּטִירִים) [פְּטוּרִים] כִּי־יֹוםָם וָלַיְלָה עֲלֵיהֶם   9:33

 בַּמְּלָאכָה׃

1Chr. 9:33   Then these, the singers, heads of households belonging to the Levites, were in chambers, having been dismissed, because work in day and night was theirs.

The word in the parentheses in this verse, translated as having been dismissed, is misspelled.  The yad is replaced by a vav in the brackets.

אֵלֶּה רָאשֵׁי הָאָבוֹת לַלְוִיִּם לְתֹלְדוֹתָם רָאשִׁים אֵלֶּה יָשְׁבוּ בִירוּשָׁלִָם׃   9:34

1Chr. 9:34   These heads of the households belonging to the Levites in their generations were the highest ones; these dwelled in Jerusalem.

וּבְגִבְעֹון יָשְׁבוּ אֲבִי־גִבְעֹון (יְעוּאֵל) [יְעִיאֵל] וְשֵׁם אִשְׁתֹּו מַעֲכָה׃   9:35

1Chr. 9:35   And the father of Gibeon, Jeiel (and the name of his wife was Maacah), dwelled in Gibeon

The name of Jeiel is misspelled in the parentheses in this verse.  The correction in the brackets replaces the vav with a yad.

וּבְנֹו הַבְּכֹור עַבְדֹּון וְצוּר וְקִישׁ וּבַעַל וְנֵר וְנָדָב׃   9:36

1Chr. 9:36   and his son, Abdon, the first born, and Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab,

וּגְדוֹר וְאַחְיוֹ וּזְכַרְיָה וּמִקְלוֹת׃   9:37

1Chr. 9:37   and Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.

וּמִקְלוֹת הוֹלִיד אֶת־שִׁמְאָם וְאַף־הֵם נֶגֶד אֲחֵיהֶם יָשְׁבוּ בִירוּשָׁלִַם עִם־אֲחֵיהֶם׃   9:38

1Chr. 9:38   And Mikloth begot Shimeam.  And they also dwelled next to their brethren in Jerusalem with their brethren.

וְנֵר הוֹלִיד אֶת־קִישׁ וְקִישׁ הוֹלִיד אֶת־שָׁאוּל וְשָׁאוּל הוֹלִיד אֶת־יְהוֹנָתָן וְאֶת־מַלְכִּי־שׁוּעַ וְאֶת־אֲבִינָדָב   9:39

 וְאֶת־אֶשְׁבָּעַל׃

1Chr. 9:39   And Ner begot Kish, and Kish begot Saul, and Saul begot Jonathan, Malchi-shua and Abinadab and Eshbaal.

וּבֶן־יְהוֹנָתָן מְרִיב בָּעַל וּמְרִי־בַעַל הוֹלִיד אֶת־מִיכָה׃   9:40

1Chr. 9:40   And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal begot Micah.

It’s interesting that the two times the name Merib-baal appears in this verse, it’s spelled differently each time.  The first time it is spelled with a beth as the fourth letter, and the second time, immediately after, the beth is omitted.  I would say that the second time is an error, and should have been flagged as such.  Still, it’s very hard for me to believe the scribe made this error unintentionally.  Another weird situation, as far as I am concerned!  But what is even stranger is that this verse is an almost exact copy of 1Chr. 8:34, and the error doesn’t appear in that verse.  Also strange is the fact that the next verse is also a near repeat of 1Chr. 8:35, but the name of Ahaz is omitted from that verse, and the name of Taharea is spelled differently.

וּבְנֵי מִיכָה פִּיתוֹן וָמֶלֶךְ וְתַחְרֵעַ׃   9:41

1Chr. 9:41   And the sons of Micah were Pithon, and Melech, and Taharea.

וְאָחָז הוֹלִיד אֶת־יַעְרָה וְיַעְרָה הוֹלִיד אֶת־עָלֶמֶת וְאֶת־עַזְמָוֶת וְאֶת־זִמְרִי וְזִמְרִי הוֹלִיד אֶת־מוֹצָא׃   9:42

1Chr. 9:42   And Ahaz begot Jarah, and Jarah begot Alemeth and Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri begot Moza.

וּמוֹצָא הוֹלִיד אֶת־בִּנְעָא וּרְפָיָה בְנוֹ אֶלְעָשָׂה בְנוֹ אָצֵל בְּנוֹ׃   9:43

1Chr. 9:43   Then Moza begot Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah was his son, Azel was his son.

וּלְאָצֵל שִׁשָּׁה בָנִים וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹתָם עַזְרִיקָם בֹּכְרוּ וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל וּשְׁעַרְיָה וְעֹבַדְיָה וְחָנָן אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי אָצַל׃   9:44

1Chr. 9:44   And six sons were for Azel, and these were their names:  Azrikam, Bocru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan; these were the sons of Azel.
