Psalms 8

Psal. 8:1   For the musician on the gittith, a psalm of David's.

The meaning of the term gittith is not well understood.  Some believe it is a harp-like instrument.

[Return to Psal. 81:1]              [Return to Psal. 84:1]

Psal. 8:2   O Lord, our Master!  How glorious is Your name in all the earth,

as You set Your majesty over the heavens!

Psal. 8:3   Since the sounds of children and sucklings

You have established strength because of Your adversaries

to insure failure of the enemy and the avenger.

Psal. 8:4   Whenever I regard Your heavens, the work of Your “fingers,”

the moon and the stars that You have rendered,

Psal. 8:5   what is humankind that You should remember us?

And a son of a human that You should care for us,

Psal. 8:6   that You would make him slightly lower than the angels,

and of glory and honor You would crown him?

David reminds us how small we are compared to the immensity and grandeur of the heavens.  Yet God is mindful of us.  Something we have probably pondered since our ancient ancestors became aware of their individuality.

Psal. 8:7   You would have him reign among the works of Your hands;

You have put everything beneath his feet:

Psal. 8:8   Sheep and oxen, all of them,

and also the beasts of the field,

Psal. 8:9   the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea,

beyond the lanes of the sea.

Psal. 8:10   Lord, our Master, How glorious is Your name in all the earth!
