This chapter contains a reckoning of the men who returned from the exile, and is basically a repetition of Ezra Chapter 2.  There are, however, a large number of discrepancies between the two accounts.  I will mention each of them, but with no links.  Otherwise you, the reader, if you were so inclined, would be flipping back and forth between the two pages.  I see no point to that, and I think most of you would not even take the trouble to do so.  As far as the differences are concerned, I am inclined to accept those that appear here, because in v.7:5 below, a book of genealogy is described as having been found, and the information contained here was copied from that book.  But the question is, who wrote the genealogy in the first place?  Could it have been any other than Ezra?  So the differences may have to just be accepted.

Nehe. 7:1   And it was when the wall had been rebuilt and I had erected the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites had been appointed

Nehe. 7:2   that I gave my brother, Hanani, charge over Jerusalem, with Hananiah, captain of the castle, for he was as a man of faith and revered God more than many.

Nehe. 7:3   And I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem may not be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing open the doors must be shut and fastened, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem must be appointed watches, each on his watch and each by his house.”

The first words, both that before the left parenthesis and that in the brackets, are the same error we’ve seen often before.  As usual, according to me, the Hebrew should be ytir'm.ai ynIa]w.

Nehe. 7:4   But the city had broad sides and it was large and the people were few in its midst and the houses had not been rebuilt.

Nehe. 7:5   Now my God put into my heart that I should assemble the nobles and the officials and the people to reckon genealogically.  And I had found the book of genealogy they had carried away at first, and I found written in it:

The third-from-last word in the top line of this verse, translated as and I found, is another exception to my theory.  The Hebrew should be וַאֲנִי אָמַרְתִי.

Nehe. 7:6   “These are the children of the province coming up from the captives of the exile whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had taken into exile to Babylon, and they returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his city,

There are some minor differences in the Hebrew from Ezra 2:1.  Apparently, this account was not copied from Ezra’s account.  In fact, I doubt that Nehemiah knew of Ezra’s account.

Several differences at this point:  The account of the sons of Jorah (Ezra 2:18) is omitted here, and the account of the sons of Bezai (Ezra 2:17) comes before this account.  Finally in Ezra 2:19, the number for the sons of Hashum  is two hundred twenty-three.

Nehe. 7:48   the sons of Lebanah, the sons of Hagabah, the sons of Salmai,

In Ezra 2:50, the name in the parentheses is spelled differently.  There as well as here, the name is corrected.  However, the correction is different in each chapter.  There the samech is left out.  Strange!  Yet it’s what sometimes happens with Hebrew names.

Nehe. 7:66   The congregation all together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

Interesting that the total number for the congregation is the same in both accounts despite the individual discrepancies.

Nehe. 7:70   And some of the heads of households had given property.  The Tirshatha gave to the treasury a thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, five hundred and thirty priestly tunics.

In Ezra, the Tirshatha was not mentioned.
