Joshua 10

Josh. 10:1   And it was when Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had taken Ai and destroyed it -- as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king -- and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were in their midst,

Josh. 10:2   that they were very afraid, because Gibeon was a great city like one of the cities of royalty, and because it was greater than Ai and all of its men were mighty.

Josh. 10:3   And Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, king of Hebron, and to Piram, king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia, king of Lachish, and to Debir, king of Eglon saying,

Josh. 10:4   “Come up to me and help me and smite Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.”

Josh. 10:5   And the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered and went up, they and all their hosts, and they camped against Gibeon and warred against it.

Josh. 10:6   And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal saying, “Do not withhold your hand from your servants.  Come up to us quickly and bring salvation to us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites, the dwellers of the hill country, have gathered to us.”

Josh. 10:7   So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of battle with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

Josh. 10:8   And the Lord said to Joshua, “Have no fear of them, for I have delivered them into your hand.  There shall not stand any from them against you.”

Josh. 10:9   Then Joshua came to them immediately; all night he came up from Gilgal.

Josh. 10:10   And the Lord agitated them before Israel and he slew them a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them by way of the rise of Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and as far as Makkedah.

Josh. 10:11   And it was in fleeing from before Israel, they were on the descent of Beth-horon, and the Lord cast down great stones upon them from the sky until Azekah and they died.  There were more of them who were killed by the stones of hail than whom the children of Israel slew by the sword.

Josh. 10:12   Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day the Lord delivered the Amorites before the children of Israel and said for the eyes of Israel, “Sun, on Gibeon be still!  And moon, on the valley of Aijalon!”

Josh. 10:13  And the sun was still, and the moon stood, until the nation avenged itself of its enemies. Is it not written on the scroll of Jashar that the sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go about a whole day?                                                     [Return to Isai. 28:21]

Where and what is the scroll of Jashar?  Apparently lost.  But is the scribe trying to reinforce our faith in this stupendous (perhaps unbelievable) miracle by mentioning that it had been recorded earlier?  As most of us are aware today, for the sun to “stand still,” the earth would have to stop rotating on its axis.  As that happened all the beings on the earth would normally have been violently thrust along the surface of the planet.  They would have suddenly found themselves and all their belongings speeding at 1,000 miles per hour toward the east.  This had to be a great miracle.  Moreover, for the moon to “stand still,” it would have had to start circling the earth toward the west to compensate for the sudden suspension of the earth’s rotation.  Doing that, it would have slowed and reversed its speed, which would normally have started the moon falling toward the earth.  So there were two simultaneous miracles.  Surely a major test of our belief!  Hold, on, though!  Perhaps it was only a local phenomenon.  Maybe the sun and moon were made to stand still only over Gibeon.  That might explain why the event was not recorded worldwide.  Still it was a miracle, in any case.             [Return to Isai. 38:8]

Josh. 10:14   And there was not a day like that before it or after it of the Lord listening to the voice of a man, when the Lord fought for Israel.

Josh. 10:15   And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Josh. 10:16   And those five kings fled and hid in a cave in Makkedah.

Josh. 10:17   And it was told to Joshua saying, “The five kings have been found hiding in a cave in Makkedah.”

Josh. 10:18   And Joshua said, “Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave and set men over it to guard them.”

Josh. 10:19   “But you will not stay.  Pursue after your enemies and smite the hindmost of them; do not permit them to enter in their cities, for the Lord, your God, has delivered them into your hand.”

Josh. 10:20   And it came to pass, after Joshua and the children of Israel were putting an end to slaying them with a very great slaughter until they consumed them, and the survivors had escaped from them and gone in to the cities of defense,

Josh. 10:21   that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace.  He did not move his tongue against any for the children of Israel.

Josh. 10:22   Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring forth those five kings from the cave.”

Josh. 10:23   So they did so, and they brought forth these five kings to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

Josh. 10:24   And it came to pass, when they brought forth these kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the men of Israel and said to the captains of the men of battle who went with him, “Come near! Put your feet on the necks of these kings.”  So they approached and put their feet on their necks.

Josh. 10:25   And Joshua said to them, “You will not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for like so shall the Lord do to all your enemies whom you will be fighting.”

Josh. 10:26   And Joshua smote them after this, and slew them, and hung them on five trees, and they remained hanging on the trees until the evening.

Josh. 10:27   And it was at the time of the setting of the sun, Joshua commanded and they took them down from off the trees and cast them into the cave where they had hidden, and they set great stones on the mouth of the cave until this selfsame day.

Josh. 10:28   And Joshua took Makkedah on that day and smote it with the edge of the sword and its king; he destroyed them and every one of the souls that was in it; he did not let a survivor remain, and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Josh. 10:29   And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought with Libnah.

Josh. 10:30   And the Lord also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel, and he smote it with the edge of the sword and every one of the souls that was in it; he did not let one survivor remain in it, and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Josh. 10:31   And Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish and camped against it and fought with it.

Josh. 10:32   And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day and he smote it and every one of the souls that was in it with the edge of the sword, like all that he had done to Libnah.

Josh. 10:33   Then Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish and Joshua smote him and his people until no more survivors were left to him.

Josh. 10:34   And Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they camped against it and fought against it,

Josh. 10:35   and they took it on that day and smote it with the edge of the sword, and he destroyed all the souls that were in it on that day, like all that he had done to Lachish.

Josh. 10:36   And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron and they fought against it,

Josh. 10:37   and they took it and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king and all its cities and all the souls that were in it. He did not leave a survivor, like all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it and all the souls that were in it.

Josh. 10:38   And Joshua turned back, and all Israel with him, to Debir and fought against it,

Josh. 10:39   and he took it and its king and all its cities, and they smote them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed every soul that was in it.  He did not leave a survivor; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and to its king, and as he had done to Libnah and its king.

Josh. 10:40   So Joshua smote all the country of the hills and of the south and of the lowland and of the ravines, and all their kings.  He did not leave a survivor but all of the living he destroyed, as the Lord, God of Israel, had commanded.

Josh. 10:41   And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea and as far as Gaza, and all the land of Goshen and as far as Gibeon.

Josh. 10:42   And Joshua took all those kings and their land at one time, for the Lord, God of Israel, had fought for Israel.

Josh. 10:43   And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp of Gilgal.

Here’s an interesting observation regarding this chapter.  Five kings of cities were mentioned near the beginning of this chapter.  Their cities were Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.  The five kings and their armies were vanquished, but the cities that were conquered were Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir.  Jerusalem and Jarmuth are not specifically mentioned.  Obviously Jerusalem was conquered sometime, but we are not told of it until Judges 1.  What we know is that Jerusalem was in the inheritance of Judah, and some of its former inhabitants, the Jebusites, lived in that city as well.
