2Kings 22

2Kin 22:1   Josiah was eight years of age into his reign and he was king in Jerusalem thirty-one years.  And the name of his mother was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah, from Bozkath.

                                                                                                                                        [Return to 2Chr. 34:1]

2Kin 22:2   And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the ways of David, his ancestor, and did not turn right or left.                                                          [Return to 2Chr. 34:2]

2Kin 22:3   And it was in the eighteenth year for king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan son of Azaliah son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the Lord saying,                    [Return to 2Chr. 34:8]

2Kin 22:4   “Go up to Hilkiah, the high priest, as he has totaled up the money that has come in to the house of the Lord that the keepers of the door have accumulated from the people,

2Kin 22:5   that they deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work who are the overseers of the house of the Lord and give it to the doers of the work who are in the house of the Lord to repair the breaches of the house,

There are two errors in this verse.  For one, the word before the first left parenthesis is singular and its pronoun, which refers back to “money” in the previous verse is feminine, where the number should be plural and the pronoun should be masculine.  The corrections are in the first set of brackets.  The second error, in the second parentheses, has a extra beth.  Its correction is in the second set of brackets.

The first doers (the overseers) are to receive the money and pay it out to the second group of doers who are the workers described in the next verse.

2Kin 22:6   to the carpenters and to the builders and to the masons, and for buying timbers and hewn stones to repair the house.”

2Kin 22:7   Only there was no accounting with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, for they were performing with faithfulness.

2Kin 22:8   And Hilkiah, the high priest, said to Shaphan, the scribe, “I have found the scroll of the Torah in the house of the Lord.”  And Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan, and he read it.

                                                                                                                                            [Return to 2Chr. 34:15]

2Kin 22:9   When Shaphan, the scribe, came in to the king, then he returned the king the word and said, “Your servants have gathered together the money that was found in the house and they have given it over to the hand of the doers of the work who are the overseers of the house of the Lord.

2Kin 22:10   Then Shaphan, the scribe, told to the king saying, “Hilkiah, the priest, gave a scroll to me.”  And Shaphan read it before the king.                                                         [Return to 2Chr. 34:18]

2Kin 22:11   And it was when the king heard the words of the scroll of the Torah, then he tore his garments.                                                                                                                       [Return to 2Chr. 34:19]

2Kin 22:12   And the king commanded Hilkiah, the priest, and Ahikam son of Shaphan, the scribe, and Achbor son of Micaiah and Shaphan, the scribe, and Asaiah, servant of the king saying,

                                                                                                                                            [Return to 2Kin. 25:22]

2Kin 22:13   “Go question the Lord for me and for the people and for all of Judah about the words of this discovered book, for the ‘anger’ of the Lord is great that it is kindled against us for the reason that our fathers did not listen concerning the words of this scroll to do according to all the writings about us.”

2Kin 22:14   So Hilkiah, the priest, went with Ahikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Assaiah, to Huldah, the prophetess, wife of Shallum son of Tikvah son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (and she dwelled in Jerusalem in the second quarter) and they spoke to her.

2Kin 22:15   And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: ‘Say to the one who sent you to me:’

2Kin 22:16   ‘Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I am bringing evil to this place and its inhabitants, all the things of the scroll of which the king of Judah has read.’

2Kin 22:17   ‘Because that they forsook Me and offered to other gods, thereby provoking Me with all the work of their hands, therefore My ‘wrath’ shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”

2Kin 22:18   “As concerning the king of Judah, who sent you to question the Lord, thus shall you say to him: ‘Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: ‘About the words that you have heard,

2Kin 22:19   because your heart was tender and you were humble before the Lord on your hearing what I spoke about this place and about its inhabitants becoming for an astonishment and for a curse, and you rent your clothes and wept before Me, so also I have heard, declares the Lord.’

2Kin 22:20   ‘For this, behold, I will gather you up to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not look on all the evil that I am bringing on this place.’”  And they returned the king the word.
