2Chronicles 8

Only a couple of the verses in this chapter are similar to some in 1Kings Chapter 9.  But most here are not found elsewhere.

2Chr. 8:1   And it was after twenty years that Solomon had built the house of the Lord and his house,

This verse is similar to 1Kin. 9:10.

2Chr. 8:2   that Solomon rebuilt the cities that Huram had given to Solomon, and had the children of Israel dwell there.

2Chr. 8:3   And Solomon went to Hamath-zobah and prevailed against it.

We know there was a land called Hamath from numerous verses in the bible (including the next verse).  So it’s possible the third and fourth words in this verse should be translated as Hamath of Zobah.  We also know that this event is not mentioned anywhere else in the bible.  But from this verse we now understand that Solomon was not always a peaceful king.

2Chr. 8:4   And he rebuilt Tadmor in the wilderness and all the storage towns which he built in Hamath.

2Chr. 8:5   And he rebuilt Upper Beth-horon and Lower Beth-horon, fortress cities of walls, gates, and barred,

2Chr. 8:6   and Baalath and all the storage towns that were Solomon's and all the chariot towns and the towns of horses, and every desirable thing that Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem and in Lebanon and in every land of his dominion.

2Chr. 8:7   All the people remaining from the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite who were not from Israel themselves,

2Chr. 8:8   from their children who remained after them in the land, whom the children of Israel did not destroy, and Solomon trained them to do task work until this day.

We learn that Solomon “enslaved” the foreigners of the land only here.  This is not mentioned elsewhere.

2Chr. 8:9   But from the children of Israel that Solomon did not set to be servants for his work, then they were men of war, and leaders of his officers, and leaders of charioteers and his horsemen.

2Chr. 8:10   and these were the leaders of the garrisons that were king Solomon's, two hundred and fifty having dominion among the people.

The word in the parentheses, translated as the garrisons, is misspelled.  The correction in the brackets removes the extra first yad.

2Chr. 8:11   And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharoah from the city of David to the house that he had built for her, for he said, “No wife of mine shall dwell in the house of David, king of Israel, because it is holy.  It is those places to which the ark of the Lord came.”

The daughter of Pharoah is mentioned in 1Kin.9:24, but the content is different.

2Chr. 8:12   Then Solomon offered burnt offerings to the Lord upon the altar of the Lord that he had built before the Temple porch,

This verse and the next are similar to 1Kin. 9:25.

2Chr. 8:13   so in the daily manner of offering according to the commandment of Moses for Sabbaths and for new moons and for appointed seasons three times during the year, during the Feast of Unleavened Bread and during the Feast of Weeks and during the Feast of Tabernacles.

2Chr. 8:14   And he maintained according to the procedure of David, his father, the courses of the priests concerning their service, and of the Levites concerning their functions of praising and ministering beside the priests in a manner day after day, and of the gatekeepers with their courses for every gate, for such was the commandment of David, the man of God.

2Chr. 8:15   And they did not depart from the commandment of the king regarding the priests and the Levites regarding any matter and regarding the treasuries.

2Chr. 8:16   So all the work of Solomon was settled; from the day from the foundation of the house of the Lord until his end of perfecting the house of the Lord.

2Chr. 8:17   Then Solomon went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth on the sea shore in the land of Edom.

2Chr. 8:18   And Huram sent to him, with the aid of his servants, ships and knowledgeable servants of the sea, and they came with the servants of Solomon to Ophir and got from there four hundred and fifty talents of gold that they brought to the king, Solomon.

The word in the parentheses, translated as ships, is misspelled.  The correction in the brackets removes the extra first vav.
