1Samuel 8

1Sam. 8:1   And it was as Samuel grew old, that he made his sons Israel’s judges.

1Sam. 8:2   Now the name of his first son was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah.  They were judges in Beer-sheba.

1Sam. 8:3   But his sons did not walk in his ways and they turned aside after dishonest gain, and took bribes and perverted justice.

The fourth word, in parentheses is spelled inappropriately (being shown as singular and should be plural), and is corrected in the brackets.

1Sam. 8:4   So all the elders of Israel gathered together and they came to Samuel in Ramah.

1Sam. 8:5   And they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons have not walked in your ways.  Now make a king for us to judge us like all the nations.”

1Sam. 8:6   But the thought was bad in the eyes of Samuel as they said, “Give a king to us to judge us,” and Samuel prayed to the Lord.

1Sam. 8:7   And the Lord said to Samuel, “Listen in to the voice of the people, to all that they will say to you, for it is not you they have rejected, but it is Me they have cast off from being King over them.”

1Sam. 8:8   “Like all the deeds that they have done from the day I brought them up from Egypt and up to this day!   As they have forsaken Me and served other gods, this they are doing also to you.”

1Sam. 8:9   “So now listen to their voice; only that you shall earnestly give warning to them and announce to them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”

1Sam. 8:10   And Samuel spoke all the words of the Lord to the people who had requested a king from him.

1Sam. 8:11   And he said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you:  He will take your sons and make his for his chariots and for his horsemen, and they will run in front of his chariots

1Sam. 8:12   (and appointing for himself captains of thousands and captains of fifties), and to plow his ground and to reap his harvest and to make his instruments of war and the implements of his chariots.”

1Sam. 8:13   “And he will take your daughters to make perfume, and for cooks and for bakers.”

1Sam. 8:14   “And your fields and your vineyards and your olive yards, he will take of the best of them and give to his servants.”

1Sam. 8:15   “And he will take a tenth of your seed and of your vineyards and give to his officers and to his servants.”

1Sam. 8:16   “And he will take your men-servants and your maid-servants and your best young men and your asses and put to his work.”

1Sam. 8:17   “He will take a tenth of your flocks and you will be for servants for him.”

1Sam. 8:18   “And you shall cry out on that day from before your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you on that day.”

1Sam. 8:19   But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel and they said, “No, for if a king shall be over us,

1Sam. 8:20   then we will be ourselves also like all the nations, and our king will judge us, and he will go out before us and fight our battles.”

1Sam. 8:21   When Samuel heard all the words of the people, then he spoke them in the ears of the Lord.

1Sam. 8:22   And the Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice and crown a king for them.”  And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Go, every man, to his city.”
