1Chronicles 19

Much of this chapter is contained in 2Samuel Chapter 10, with numerous deviations, none of which are of concern except as noted.

1Chr. 19:1   And it was after this that Nahash, king of the children of Ammon, died, and his son became king in his place.

1Chr. 19:2   And David said, “I will deal kindly with Hanun, the son of Nahash, because his father dealt kindly with me.”  And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father.  And the servants of David came to the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun to comfort him.

1Chr. 19:3   But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hunan, “Is David honoring your father In your eyes when he sends comforters to you?  Do not his servants come to you in order to investigate so as to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”

1Chr. 19:4   So Hanun seized the servants of David and shaved them and cut their garments in half up to the hip, and sent them away.

In 2Sam. 10:4, the servants had half their beards shaved and their garments were cut up to their buttocks.

1Chr. 19:5   And they came and made known to David about the men, and he sent to meet them, because they had been exceedingly humiliated. And the king had said, “Remain in Jericho until your beard will have regrown, then you can return.”

1Chr. 19:6   Then the children of Ammon realized that they had made themselves odious with David.  So Hanun sent, and the children of Ammon, a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen for themselves from Aram-naharaim and from Aram-maacah and from Zobah.

                                                                                                                                        [Return to Psal. 60:2]

1Chr. 19:7   So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah and his people, and they came and encamped before Medeba.  And the children of Ammon gathered from their cities and came for battle.

1Chr. 19:8   When David heard, then he sent Joab and the entire host of mighty men.

1Chr. 19:9   And the children of Ammon came out and stood in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were in the field by themselves.

1Chr. 19:10   Now Joab saw that the face of the battle was against him, front and rear; then he chose from every young man in Israel and set in array against Aram.

1Chr. 19:11   And he gave the rest of the people into the hand of Abishai, his brother, and they stood in array against the children of Ammon.

1Chr. 19:12   And he said, “Should Aram be stronger than I, then you will be my salvation, and should the children of Ammon be stronger than you, then I will deliver you.”

1Chr. 19:13   “Have courage that we are strong for our people and for the cities of our God, and let the Lord do what is good in His eyes.”

1Chr. 19:14   And Joab approached, and the people who were with him, to the front of Aram to do battle, and they fled from before him.

1Chr. 19:15   When the children of Ammon saw that Aram had fled, then they fled too from before Abishai, his brother, and reentered the city.  Then Joab went to Jerusalem.

1Chr. 19:16   When Aram saw that they had been stricken before Israel, then they sent messengers and Aram brought out who was from beyond the river, and Shophach, captain of the army of Hadarezer, was before them.

1Chr. 19:17   And this was told to David, and he assembled all Israel and crossed the Jordan and came to them and stood in array toward them.  When David had set in battle array against Aram, then they fought with him.

1Chr. 19:18   And Aram fled from before Israel as David destroyed from Aram seven thousand chariot drivers and forty thousand horsemen, and Shophach, captain of the army, was put to death.

In 2Sam. 10:18, it was seven hundred chariot drivers instead of seven thousand.  And the name of Shophach was Shobach, a beth there being a peh here.

1Chr. 19:19   When the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, then they made peace with David and served him, and Aram refused to save the children of Ammon any more.
