Psalms 132

Psal. 132:1   A song of ascendance:

                        Remember, Lord, about David,

                                  all his affliction,

Psal. 132:2   that he swore to the Lord,

vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

Psal. 132:3   “I will not come into the tent of my house

or go up upon the mattress of my bed,

Psal. 132:4   I will not allow sleep to my eyes,

                                  slumber to my eyelids,

Psal. 132:5   until I find a place for the Lord,

dwellings for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Psal. 132:6   Lo, we heard it was in Ephrath;

we found it in fields of wood.

Because the Hebrew word I translate as dwellings in vss. 5 and 7, is plural, I imagine this psalm refers to at least two places where the presence of the Lord was assumed to be.  Ephrath is another name for Bethlehem, where the ark is presumed to have resided for twenty years.  It is thought by some that fields of wood may refer to a neighborhood of Kiriath-jearim, whose literal meaning is City of Woods.

Psal. 132:7   Let us go to His dwellings,

let us bow down toward the footstool of His feet.

Psal. 132:8   Arise, Lord, to Your resting place,

You and the ark of Your strength.

Psal. 132:9   Let Your priests be clothed in righteousness,

and Your faithful ones shout for joy.

Psal. 132:10   For the sake of David, Your servant,

may You not turn away the face of Your anointed.

Psal. 132:11   The Lord swore to David

-- faithful, He will not turn back from it:

“From the fruit of your body I will appoint to your throne.”

Psal. 132:12   “If your children will keep My covenant and My testimonies

                                  that I will teach them,

their children also forever will have a claim to your throne.”

Psal. 132:13   Indeed the Lord has decided on Zion;

He desires it for His dwelling place.

Psal. 132:14   “This shall be My resting place forever.

Here I shall dwell, because I desire it."

Psal. 132:15   “I shall abundantly bless its provision,

I shall feed its needy adequate bread.”

Psal. 132:16   “And I shall have its priests wear salvation,

and its faithful shall give a ringing shout of exultation.”

I have prepared a lamp for My anointed.”

Psal. 132:18   “I shall make his enemies wear shame,

but on him his crown shall shine.”
