Judges 10

 

וַיָּקָם אַחֲרֵי אֲבִימֶלֶךְ לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל תּוֹלָע בֶּן־פּוּאָה בֶּן־דּוֹדוֹ אִישׁ יִשָּׂשכָר וְהוּא־יֹשֵׁב   10:1

בְּשָׁמִיר בְּהַר אֶפְרָיִם׃

Judg. 10:1   And after Abimelech, Tola son of Puah son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel, and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֶשְׂרִים וְשָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנָה וַיָּמָת וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּשָׁמִיר׃   10:2

Judg. 10:2   And he judged Israel twenty-three years, then he died and was buried in Shamir.

וַיָּקָם אַחֲרָיו יָאִיר הַגִּלְעָדִי וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁתַּיִם שָׁנָה׃   10:3

Judg. 10:3   And Jair of the Gileadites arose after him, and he judged Israel twenty-two years.

וַיְהִי־לוֹ שְׁלֹשִׁים בָּנִים רֹכְבִים עַל־שְׁלֹשִׁים עֲיָרִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים עֲיָרִים לָהֶם לָהֶם יִקְרְאוּ חַוֺּת יָאִיר עַד   10:4

הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד׃

Judg. 10:4   And he had thirty sons, riders on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty towns; they had given the name of Havvoth Jair to them until this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

The name Havvoth Jair can mean villages of Jair.

וַיָּמָת יָאִיר וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּקָמוֹן׃   10:5

Judg. 10:5   And Jair died and he was buried in Kamon.

וַיֹּסִפוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲשׂוֹת הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת־הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת־הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת וְאֶת־אֱלֹהֵי אֲרָם   10:6

וְאֶת־אֱלֹהֵי צִידוֹן וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי מוֹאָב וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי בְנֵי־עַמּוֹן וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיַּעַזְבוּ אֶת־יְהוָה

וְלֹא עֲבָדוּהוּ׃

Judg. 10:6   And the children of Israel proceeded to do what was evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth and the gods of Aram and the gods of Zidon and the gods of Moab and the gods of the children of Ammon and the gods of the Philistines, and they forsook the Lord and did not serve Him.

וַיִּחַר־אַף יְהוָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּמְכְּרֵם בְּיַד־פְּלִשְׁתִּים וּבְיַד בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן׃   10:7

Judg. 10:7   And the “anger” of the Lord was kindled against Israel and He surrendered them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

וַיִּרְעֲצוּ וַיְרֹצְצוּ אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּשָּׁנָה הַהִיא שְׁמֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה אֶת־כָּל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר   10:8

הַיַּרְדֵּן בְּאֶרֶץ הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר בַּגִּלְעָד׃

Judg. 10:8   And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel, with that year, eighteen years, all the children of Israel who were on the other side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which was in Gilead.

וַיַּעַבְרוּ בְנֵי־עַמּוֹן אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן לְהִלָּחֵם גַּם־בִּיהוּדָה וּבְבִנְיָמִין וּבְבֵית אֶפְרָיִם וַתֵּצֶר לְיִשְׂרָאֵל מְאֹד׃   10:9

Judg. 10:9   And the children of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight with Judah and with Benjamin and with the house of Ephraim, and the distress of Israel was sore.

וַיִּזְעֲקוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהוָה לֵאמֹר חָטָאנוּ לָךְ וְכִי עָזַבְנוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵינוּ וַנַּעֲבֹד אֶת־הַבְּעָלִים׃   10:10

Judg. 10:10   And the children of Israel cried to the Lord saying, “We have sinned by You in that we have forsaken our God and have served the Baalim.”

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֲלֹא מִמִּצְרַיִם וּמִן־הָאֱמֹרִי וּמִן־בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וּמִן־פְּלִשְׁתִּים׃   10:11

Judg. 10:11   And the Lord said to the children of Israel, “Had not those from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines,

וְצִידוֹנִים וַעֲמָלֵק וּמָעוֹן לָחֲצוּ אֶתְכֶם וַתִּצְעֲקוּ אֵלַי וָאוֹשִׁיעָה אֶתְכֶם מִיָּדָם׃   10:12

Judg. 10:12   and the Zidonians, and Amalek, and Maon oppressed you, and you had cried to Me and I had saved you from their hand?”

וְאַתֶּם עֲזַבְתֶּם אוֹתִי וַתַּעַבְדוּ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לָכֵן לֹא־אוֹסִיף לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶתְכֶם׃   10:13

Judg. 10:13   “Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods. Therefore I will no longer continue to save you.”

לְכוּ וְזַעֲקוּ אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם בָּם הֵמָּה יוֹשִׁיעוּ לָכֶם בְּעֵת צָרַתְכֶם׃   10:14

Judg. 10:14   “Go and cry to the gods with which you have joined -- let them bring salvation to you in the time of your distress.”

וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהוָה חָטָאנוּ עֲשֵׂה־אַתָּה לָנוּ כְּכָל־הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֶיךָ אַךְ הַצִּילֵנוּ נָא הַיּוֹםהַזֶּה׃   10:15

Judg. 10:15   And the children of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned; You do to us about anything that is good in Your eyes -- only please rescue us this day.”

וַיָּסִירוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר מִקִּרְבָּם וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת־יְהוָה וַתִּקְצַר נַפְשׁוֹ בַּעֲמַל יִשְׂרָאֵל׃   10:16

Judg. 10:16   And they put away the gods of the foreigners from their midst and served the Lord, and His “soul” “grieved” over the misery of Israel.

וַיִּצָּעֲקוּ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּגִּלְעָד וַיֵּאָסְפוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּמִּצְפָּה׃   10:17

Judg. 10:17   And the children of Ammon gathered together and camped in Gilead.  And the children of Israel assembled themselves and they camped in Mizpah.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָעָם שָׂרֵי גִלְעָד אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ מִי הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יָחֵל לְהִלָּחֵם בִּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן יִהְיֶה לְרֹאשׁ לְכֹל   10:18

יֹשְׁבֵי גִלְעָד׃

Judg. 10:18   And the people, the chiefs of Gilead, said each man to his neighbor, “Whoever is the man who will start to fight with the children of Ammon will be for a captain to all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
