2Kings 14

2Kin. 14:1   In the second year for Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah, the son of king Joash, became king of Judah.

2Kin. 14:2   He was twenty-five years of age into his reign, and he was king in Jerusalem twenty-nine years.  And the name of his mother was Jehoaddan, from Jerusalem.

                                                                                                                                     [Return to 2Chr. 25:1]

The name of Amaziah’s mother in the parentheses has an extra yad, the second one.  The correct spelling is in the brackets.

2Kin. 14:3   And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, only not like David, his forefather.  He did like all that his father, Joash, did.

2Kin. 14:4   Still, the high places were not taken away.  The people were yet sacrificing and offering in the high places.

2Kin. 14:5   And it happened, as the kingdom became established in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain his father, the king.

2Kin. 14:6   But he did not put the children of the murderers to death, according to the writing in the scroll of the law of Moses that the Lord had commanded saying, “The fathers shall not be put to death because of the children, and the children shall not be put to death because of the fathers, but a man shall be put to death only by his own sin.”                                    [Return to 2Chr. 25:1]

This verse echoes the words of Deut. 24:16.  Besides this, the vav in the misspelled word in parentheses is in the wrong place.  The same word, translated as shall ... be put to death, appears twice previously in this verse (in plural form, whereas this word is singular) and they are properly spelled.  The correction is in the brackets.

2Kin. 14:7   He slew Edom, ten thousand, in the valley of salt, and he seized Sela in war and he called its name Joktheel until this day.                                                             [Return to 2Chr. 25:11]

2Kin. 14:8   Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us engage in battle.”                                             [Return to 2Chr. 25:17]

2Kin. 14:9   And Jehoash, king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, saying, “The thorn that is in Lebanon sends to the cedar that is in Lebanon saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife.’  Then a beast of the field that is in Lebanon passes over and tramples the thorn.”

Jehoash here resorts to a parable to compare himself (the cedar) with Amaziah (the thorn). I have to guess that his choice of words reflected his scorn for Amaziah by describing him as a thorn, which might cause discomfort but  can easily be dealt with.                                         [Return to 2Chr. 25:18]

2Kin. 14:10   “Indeed you have smitten Edom.  So you may lift up your heart.  Be glorified and remain in your home.  Now why should you meddle with evil that you would fall, you and Judah with you?”                                                                                                          [Return to 2Chr. 25:19]

2Kin. 14:11   But Amaziah did not listen.  So Jehoash, king of Israel, went up and they engaged in battle, he and Amaziah, king of Judah, in Beth-shemesh, which was Judah's.

                                                                                                                                  [Return to 2Chr. 25:20]

2Kin. 14:12   And Judah was hurt before Israel, and they fled, each to his tent.

2Kin. 14:13   And Jehoash, king of Israel, took Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Jehoash son of Ahaziah in Beth-shemesh and they came into Jerusalem and he made a breach in the wall of Jerusalem by the gate of Ephraim four hundred cubits to the corner gate.

                                                                                                                                   [Return to 2Chr. 25:23]

2Kin. 14:14   And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels to be found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the house of the king, and the children of the hostages, and returned to Samaria.                                                                                             [Return to 2Chr. 25:24]

2Kin. 14:15   And the rest of the acts of Jehoash that he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah, king of Judah, are they not written on the scroll of the chronicles of the days of the kings of Israel?

2Kin. 14:16   And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel, and Jeroboam, his son, became king in his place.

2Kin. 14:21   And all the people of Judah took Azariah when he was sixteen years of age and they made him king in place of his father, Amaziah.
