1Kings 18

1Kin. 18:1   And it was many days into the third year when the word of the Lord occurred to Elijah saying, “Go show yourself to Ahab and I will send rain over the surface of the land.”

1Kin. 18:2   So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab.  Now the famine had been sore in Samaria.

1Kin. 18:3   So Ahab had called to Obadiah, who was over the household.  Now Obadiah was very afraid of the Lord.

1Kin. 18:4   So it was with Jezebel cutting down the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hid them, fifty each in a cave, and fed them bread and water.

1Kin. 18:5   And Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the brooks.  Perhaps we will find grass and keep the horses and mules alive so we do not lose some of the beasts.”

1Kin. 18:6   So they had apportioned to themselves the land to pass through it, Ahab going by one way by himself, and Obadiah going by another way by himself.

1Kin. 18:7   So Obadiah was on the way when he beheld Elijah meeting him, and he knew him and fell on his face and said, “Are you he, my lord Elijah?”

1Kin. 18:8   And he said to him, “It is I.  Go say to your lord, ‘Behold, it is Elijah!’”

1Kin. 18:9   And he said, “How have I sinned that you deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab for him to kill me?”

1Kin. 18:10   “As the Lord, your God, lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you.  When they would say, ‘There is none,’ then he would make the kingdom or the nation swear when it could not find you.”

1Kin. 18:11   “And now you say, ‘Go say to your lord, ‘Behold, It is Elijah.’”

1Kin. 18:12   “And it will happen, I will go from you and the spirit of the Lord will lift you up, where I would not know, so I will come to tell to Ahab, and he will not find you, and he will kill me.  But your servant has feared the Lord since my youth.”

1Kin. 18:13   “Has it not been told to my lord what I did when Jezebal had slain the prophets of the Lord, and I hid a hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty each in a cave, and fed them bread and water?”

1Kin. 18:14   And now you say, “Go say to your lord, ‘Behold, It is Elijah.’  And he will kill me.”

1Kin. 18:15   And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before Whom I stand, surely today I will appear to him.”

1Kin. 18:16   So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and he reported to him.  Then Ahab went to meet Elijah.

1Kin. 18:17   And it happened upon Ahab seeing Elijah that Ahab said to him, “Are you this troubler of Israel?”

1Kin. 18:18   And he said, “I have not troubled Israel, but only you and the house of your fathers, by your forsaking the commandments of the Lord and going after the Baalim.”

1Kin. 18:19   “So now send, gather to me all of Israel at Mount Carmel, and four hundred prophets of Baal, and four hundred prophets of Asherah, eaters of the table of Jezebel.”

1Kin. 18:20   So Ahab sent throughout the children of Israel and gathered the prophets at Mount Carmel.

1Kin. 18:21   Then Elijah came near to all the people and said, “Until when will you be divided over two opinions?  If the Lord is He Who is God, go after Him, but if it is Baal, go after him.”  And the people did not answer him a word.

1Kin. 18:22   Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the remaining prophet for the Lord by myself, but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.”

1Kin. 18:23   “So let them give two bullocks to us, and let them choose for themselves one bullock and cut it into pieces, and lay on wood but they will not bring fire, and I will prepare the other bullock and I will put on wood and I will not bring fire.”

1Kin. 18:24   “And you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the Lord, and the God Who answers with fire, let Him be God.  And all the people answered and they said, “Good is the word.”

1Kin. 18:25   Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bullock and prepare first, for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but do not bring fire.”

1Kin. 18:26   And they took the bullock that was given to them, and they prepared, and they called on the name of Baal from the morning and until noon saying, “O Baal, answer us.”   But there was not a sound and there was no answer, as they danced about the altar that had been made.

1Kin. 18:27   And it was at noon that Elijah made fun of them and said, “Call in a louder voice, for he is a god.  Either he meditates or he has withdrawn to himself, or is on the way for himself.  Maybe he is asleep and must be wakened.”

1Kin. 18:28   So they called with a loud voice and cut themselves, as was their custom, with swords and with lances until blood gushed out on them.

1Kin. 18:29   And it was when the noon hour had passed that they prophesied until the offering of evening, but there was not a sound and there was no answer and there was none listening.

1Kin. 18:30   Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.”  And all the people came near to him.  And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been pulled down,

1Kin. 18:31   and Elijah took twelve stones, which was the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of the Lord came saying, “Israel shall be your name.”

1Kin. 18:32   And he set up the stones, an altar in the name of the Lord, and he made a channel large enough for two measures of seed surrounding the altar.

1Kin. 18:33   Then he arranged the wood and cut into pieces the bullock and placed on the wood.

1Kin. 18:34   Then he said, “Fill four jars of water and pour on the burnt offering and on the wood.”  And he said, “Again!”  And they did it again.  Then he said, “A third time!”  And they did it a third time.

1Kin. 18:35   And the water went around the altar.  Then he also filled the channel with water.

1Kin. 18:36   And it was after the offering of the evening that Elijah, the prophet, drew near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today it will be acknowledged that you are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and by Your word I do all these things.”

The word in parentheses, translated as by Your word, is misspelled with an extra yad, making it plural (by Your words).  The correct spelling appears in the brackets.

1Kin. 18:37   “Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that these people will know that You, Lord, are He Who is God, and it is You Who turns their hearts back.”

1Kin. 18:38   Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and the water that was in the channel was licked up.

1Kin. 18:39   When all the people saw, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, He is God.  The Lord, He is God.”

1Kin. 18:40   And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal.  One must not escape from them.”  And they caught them, and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.                                                                                        [Return to 1Kin. 22:7]

1Kin. 18:41   And Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink, for it is the sound of a tumult of rain.”

1Kin. 18:42   And Ahab rose up to eat and to drink.  And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel and lowered himself to the ground and put his face between his knees.

The misspelled word in this verse is missing a yad, making it singular, his knee, and should be plural, his knees.  The correct spelling appears in the brackets.

1Kin. 18:43   And he said to his servant, “Ascend now, look toward the sea.”  And he went up and looked, and he said, “There is nothing.”  And he said, “Go back seven times.”

1Kin. 18:44   And it was on the seventh that he said, “Behold, a cloud as small as the hand of a man is rising from the sea.”  And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, “Prepare yourself and go down, so the rain does not stop you.”

1Kin. 18:45   And it happened while thus and while so that the skies became dark, cloudy and windy, and a great rain began.  And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.

1Kin. 18:46   And the “hand” of the Lord came to Elijah, and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab until your approach to Jezreel.
